The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan embarked upon in 1977, a new project, "ANCIENT INSIGHTS AND MODERN DISCOVERIES(AIMD)" with the object of examining and evaluating critically the possible inter-relationships or correlations between ancient intellectual endeavours, specially of India, and modern scientific thoughts and achievements. Fifteen years ago, eminent Scientists and Sanskritists began to take fresh and renewed interest in this project and offered to associate themselves actively in promoting a Centre with definite objectives. The plan to set up such a Centre got further impetus through the munificence of Shri Ramakrishna Bajaj who offered generous support for starting the Centre. It was thought appropriate to name the Centre after MAHATMA GANDHI and found it as a JAMNALAL BAJAJ CENTENARY PROJECT.
Some elders & associates of the Bahavan's family like Swami Ranganathanandaji, Bharataratna Sri C.Subramaniam, Sri S.Ramakrishnan, Dr. N.A.Palkhivala and Dr. Raja Ramanna sat around and discussed the issue thread bare and felt the need of starting a new Institution under the auspices of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in 1989(Nov.4). This was to be a constituent unit of the Bhavan and named "BHAVAN'S GANDHI CENTRE OF SCIENCE AND HUMAN VALUES".
The institution had to come into grips with the modern science and technology with ancient Indian tradition. After all, Gandhiji was never reluctant to the advancement of science and technology as long as it was in the service of the common man, the poor and the downtrodden. Scientific temper had to be infused into him to help make him modern in his outlook and behaviour, vanishing superstition, illiteracy and stagnation.
Dr. Raja Ramanna, Internationally known Nuclear Scientist of India, is the Founder Chairman of Bhavan's Gandhi Centre. Dr.Ramanna was assisted by Dr. H.K.Ranganath, Hon.Director and an Executive Committee consisting of distinguished people of high profile from different walks of life. The Centre has a Finance Committee and Programme Committee consisting of experienced persons of immense talent to plan and project its well thought out programmes. Dr. B.V.Sreekantan, another distinguished Scientist, formerly Director, TIFR., Mumbai, has been our Chiarman since 2004. Dr. S.Balachandra Rao, is the present Hon.Director of the Centre.
The Centre believes in going to the students in educational and training institutes, and draw them into discussion with experts on themes of contemporary relevance. These programmes entitled 'Students' Interface' would provide the much needed opportunity for free and frank discussions on topics of current interest. The Centre has so far conducted many such programmes which have been found to be extremely popular with the student community.

One other activity sponsored by the Centre is Expert's Meets/colloquia ('Open House'), on burning topics of the day, like 'Media and Society', 'Students and Examination', 'Tradition and Modernity', 'Science, Technology and Society', and 'Education System-Present and Future'. The Centre conducted Workshop's for the College students on Science topics like "Indian Mathematics & Astronomy", 'Inner space & Outer space" , "See your health-A medical Perspective" and etc.

One of the high points of the activities of the Centre is research and publication of readable material for the young on Human Values found in different religions, religious scriptures, linguistic literatures, Science & technology, Sanskrit lore and traditional folklore. During the last ten years, Gandhi Centre has published 75 books (46 in English & 29 in Kannada) for the young in the series. Some books are yet to see the light of the day.

The Centre has established liaison with other institutions which have Gandhi Ideology to propogate. The institute is, perhaps, one of the youngest in the country dealing with Gandhian perspectives to meet the challenges of the contemporary times. It has the satisfaction of being hailed by scholars, sages, savants and administrators as doing path-breaking work in the right direction, which would help the youth of the world to understand, disseminate and practice the salient features of the ancient Indian wisdom and Gandhian perspectives.
